Ngā Reo Whanake - Voices of change: past, present, future

Experience the impact of social change from the past through to the present with Ngā Reo Whanake – Voices of change: past, present, future. 

This programme is a collaboration between New Zealand Parliament and the National Library of New Zealand.

The programme starts at the He Tohu exhibition with a focus on voices of the past and actions taken by people that have shaped Aotearoa New Zealand. National Library and Parliament will be linked together with a hīkoi (walk) between the buildings, centred on the past landscape and how this ties into the present. Finishing at Parliament, students will be channelling their voices and learning about how they can have their say today.

Best suited: School years 7-10 with prior knowledge on the documents featured in He Tohu and processes of Parliament.  

Learning areas: Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum  

Duration: 2 hours  

Days and times: Friday — 10.00am – 12.00pm and 1pm to 3pm

Highlights 

The visit will include:  

• He Tohu visit (45 minutes) 

• Hikoi to Parliament 

• Tour of Parliament (45 minutes). 

At He Tohu ākonga will journey to the past and learn about people whose actions changed Aotearoa New Zealand. They'll hear about people whose voices brought about:  

• He Whakaputanga  

• Te Tiriti of Waitangi  

• Women’s Suffrage Petition.  

At Parliament ākonga will learn how they can have their say today through the processes of Parliament and use these tools to ensure a better future for themselves, their whānau, and their community.
